Frank Dillane as Nick
Nick (Frank Dillane) attempts to earn Troy’s (Daniel Sharman) trust by joining the militia in a sneak peek from the two-part midseason finale of “Fear the Walking Dead.” AMC

NIck (Frank Dillane) is getting a new role at Broke Jaw Ranch.

In a sneak peek from the first half (episode 7) of the two-part midseason finale of “Fear the Walking Dead,” Nick approaches Troy (Daniel Sharman) at the ranch’s shooting range and tells him that would like to join the militia.

“Why join the militia?” Troy asks Nick.

“I don’t know. Maybe I feel bad about what I’ve done,” Nick answers. “You ever feel that way about anything? You know like you do something and people die and then things get worse?”

“I got Travis killed,” Nick admits. “And now my mom has to bear that loss and my sister is missing. I need an occupation.”

“Don’t be too hard on yourself,” Troy tell Nick.

“Also I want to protect [the ranch] from the ones who killed the Trimbols. I saw the savage,” adds Madison’s (Kim Dickens) son, referring to Walker (Michael Greyeyes) and his men’s supposed killing of the Trimbols.

Although completely surprised by Nick’s decision, Troy hands him a rifle, suggesting that he’s welcoming the ranch’s newcomer to the armed group.

As fans know, Nick isn’t being totally honest with Troy, at least in the latter part of their conversation above. In Season 3, episode 6, Nick told Madison that he thinks the Trimbols were murdered by Troy and not by Walker and his men. Before going back to the ranch with the Trimbols’ bodies, Nick pointed out to his mom that the food supplies that the Trimbols had with them when they left the ranch were not stolen. If Walker and his men were behind the family’s massacre, then they would have taken the supplies before leaving the murder scene.

Although Madison knows, in truth, that Troy was the one responsible for the killings, she decided to cover up his crime in front of everyone at the ranch — a move that Nick didn’t see coming but completely understands.

“You would have said no,” Madison said in last night’s episode after Nick asked her why she didn’t tell him her plan beforehand.

“No, I get it. I hate it [but] I get it,” Nick said. “I would have backed you like I’m backing you now.”

Clearly, Nick’s decision to join the militia is just part of their plan to earn Troy’s trust even more.
