Six people died, including a train operator on Monday in Washington DC when two Metrorail trains collided shortly after 5 p.m. EST between the Fort Totten and Takoma stations, according to a Washington Post reporter blog updated at 8:33 p.m.

The Red Line trains crashed between Fort Totten and Takoman stations, the Post reported earlier. A report at 8:23 p.m. stated 70 people were injured.

Reuters reported the train operator was a female.

One train rear-ended another but Metro General Manager John B. Catoe said he didn’t know why.
