Earlier this year FIFA announced it was finally adding women to its popular “FIFA” video game series. Now, following the USA women’s soccer team’s World Cup win, player Alex Morgan has made the cover of the “FIFA 16” U.S. video game release, alongside male soccer player Lionel Messi.
On Monday, Morgan tweeted out a photo of the new cover, along with the text “I’m so honored to be featured on the cover of #FIFA16. Thank you @EASPORTSFIFA!”

ESPN FC tweeted out the image shortly after, with the caption "BREAKING: #USWNT's Alex Morgan will join Lionel Messi on the #FIFA16USCover!" which EA FIFA 16 retweeted.
"It is an incredible honor to be one of the first women featured on the cover of FIFA," Morgan said in a statement. "I know people all over the world play this game and I'm really excited that FIFA 16 is putting such an important spotlight on women's soccer. And now to share the cover with today's greatest player is surreal."
Morgan is a member of both the Portland Thorns FC and the National Women’s Soccer League and an Olympic gold medalist.
EA also announced on Monday that Canadian Women's National Team captain Christine Sinclair will be featured on the cover for the Canadian edition of "FIFA 16."
"FIFA 16" is scheduled for release on September 22 for PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, PC, Android and iOS. Watch the trailer announcement below.
