The National Weather Service in Gray has issued a flood warning for Kennebec River at Skowhegan affecting Somerset County.

Recent rainfall has allowed for rapid rises on the upper Kennebec River early this morning, the agency said in a statement.

More scattered showers will fall in the region today, allowing for additional runoff into the river basin. At 3 am Monday, the flow was 29200 cubic feet per second (CFS).

The river is expected to reach flood stage this morning before peaking out near or above 40000 CFS by this evening.

The agency added that the Kennebec River may approach flood stage at Augusta early Tuesday morning.
