An apparent suspicion of auto theft resulted in a shootout at a Florida airport on Wednesday.

Police are seeking a 20-year-old man who fled the scene after a shootout around 2:20 p.m. ET with authorities at Jacksonville International Airport. Two other male suspects were also arrested in connection with the incident.

SWAT officers located a missing Ford Crown Victoria on Wednesday afternoon and followed the vehicle to the airport's rental car garage, NBC-affiliate WTLV of Jacksonville reported. Jacksonville Sheriff Chief’s Tom Hackney said authorities witnessed the car “stopping in an odd position” before its driver rammed it into two sheriff's vehicles and escaped the garage by speeding in reverse.

Police opened fire after the vehicle's occupants attempted to flee, shooting a 17-year-old male who's also a suspect in the ankle. Police arrested the teen and a 27-year-old man in connection with the shooting after tracking the vehicle to an apartment complex in Jacksonville. Police said a third suspect, Rodney Lorenzo Addison, 20, is still at large.

“This is a dangerous man -- these detectives felt this enough that they used deadly force,” Hackney said.

Initial media reports indicated that a fourth male was also involved in the shooting, but that hasn't been confirmed by authorities.

As a safety precaution, Highlands Elementary School, which is located about six miles from the airport, went on "code red" lock down after police announced shots fired in the area, the local television news station reported.
