General Motors Corp. the largest automaker in the nation, said sales in the month of January plunged 49 percent while Ford Motor Co. said sales dropped as much as 40.2 percent.

Toyota didn't stay behind, it reported today sales in the U.S. declined 32 percent in the month. Honda Motor Co. sold 28 percent less autos and Nissan Motor Co. declined 30 percent.

Chrysler LLC foretasted its vehicle sales for January to decline as much as 35 percent from a year earlier.
