Super Mighty Power Man
“Super Mighty Power Man” is releasing on Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Box Hedge Games/Kickstarter

Two developers who had worked on “Assassin’s Creed” and many other AAA and mobile video games are now preparing to launch their own game, an 8-bit retro action platformer called “Super Mighty Power Man.” The game, which borrows a lot of elements from the best ’80s and ’90s NES games, is coming to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One next year.

For those who are not familiar with Box Hedge Games, it is a small indie studio that was formed by two developers, Alessandro D. and David R., in 2016. Both have extensive experience in the gaming industry, since they have worked for various companies for the past 18 years. Apart from “Assassin’s Creed,” they were also involved in the development of “Castlevania - Dawn of Sorrow,” “The Sims,” “Men in Black,” “Bubble Witch Saga,” “Spyro the Dragon” and many more.

Box Hedge is currently gearing up for the launch of its true 8-bit retro action-platformer, but it still needs support from gamers who are willing to back its project up via Kickstarter. On Nov. 14, the studio launched the crowdfunding project for “Super Mighty Power Man.” Thus far, it has managed to accumulate more than 25 percent of its $58,708 initial goal.

Late last week, the developers published an update, announcing the removal of the Stretch Goals. As per the Box Hedge team, they removed the Stretch Goals to focus on players and key features. However, they admitted that they are not discarding the Stretch Goals or any additional features. They are simply saving it for the future.

Another important detail discussed in the update is the game’s support for Xbox One and PS4 platforms as well as the new physical pledges available. After listening to their backers, the developers decided to support the PS4 and Xbox One platforms and update their pledge tiers. Henceforth, backers pledging at The Trooper Level ($18) and above will have the option to choose between a PS4 and an Xbox One copy.

Box Hedge is also offering new collectible items as part of the update. Backers who are pledging $65 and above to the Kickstarter campaign will get a physical art book of “Super Mighty Power Man.” The book contains early concepts, sketches, full level maps and other important details about the game. Meanwhile, those who are pledging $77 and up will be rewarded with a physical CD soundtrack.

While the Box Hedge team cannot guarantee a physical copy of Nintendo 3DS and Switch cartridges, they still want to provide a means for fans who want to play the game in said consoles. Hence, they have decided to follow what Nintendo Europe did with the “Pokemon Gold and Silver” games on the 3DS. They are releasing a retailed game box with a redeem code slipped inside. They are also providing fans with a physical instruction booklet. It’s important to note though that these are only available to backers who are pledging $88 and above to the project.

“Super Mighty Power Man” is a 2D action-platformer that’s greatly inspired by the “Mega Man” game series and other games such as “Super Mario Bros.,” “Castlevania,” “Contra,” “Kirby,” “Duck Tales,” “Shovel Knight,” “Retro City Rampage” and “VVVVVV.” According to the developers, this upcoming game is a true homage to the NES legendary gaming era, since it has all of the elements of the games from the late ’80s and early ’90s.

In the game, players will assume the role of Corey, a gutsy kid who will be tasked to save the galaxy from the evil forces of General Mok. In his adventure, he will be assisted by an extraterrestrial robot named Robby and he will be armed with a device known as The Power Grasp. This mysterious weapon grants its user with superhuman powers. As such, Corey will have the ability to merge with other lifeforms and transform into one of the eight forms of Super Mighty Power Man: human boy (default), ant, eel, falcon, cat, crab, ape and the eighth and final form that is still a big secret.
