France has started airstrikes against the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS, from aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, according to reports.

The Agence France-Presse reported that several Rafale fighter planes took off from the carrier early Friday to be part of an attack in Mosul, an ISIS-stronghold in Iraq. The country's only aircraft carrier was reportedly sent to the region earlier in September.

Last year, France joined the U.S.-led coalition to hit ISIS strongholds in Iraq and Syria after a series of deadly attacks by the extremist group, including the killing of 12 people at the Paris headquarters of the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo in January 2015.

This is a developing story.
