Christine Lagarde, the French Finance Minister, said that France is about to introduce a tax on bank's bonuses similar to the one announced by the British finance Minister Darling in the Pre-Budget report. According to the new law which is expected to take place in 2010, bankers will pay 50% on bonuses above 24,000 euros.

However, the proposal received a lot of criticism as it might reduce the French bank's competitiveness, while the banking system did not suffer in France or received bailouts as in the case in England.
