France will push for stronger commitments to limit bankers' bonuses at a meeting of G20 leaders in September, President Nicolas Sarkozy said on Tuesday.

He was speaking after urging leading French bankers to discuss national measures that could be adopted immediately to curtail the kind of huge bonuses blamed in part for the excessive risk taking that helped trigger the financial crisis. Sarkozy, who visists Berlin on Monday for talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, said he would work for a European solution to the issue.

I will not be sparing in my effort to come up with a European approach on this subject, he said.
