Frank Grillo is returning to star in “Purge 3.” The actor will reprise his role as Leo Barnes, who was first introduced in the second installment of the “Purge” series, “The Purge: Anarchy.”

The 50-year-old actor took to Twitter to confirm his return in “Purge 3” by sharing Variety ’s report that he is in final negotiations to star in the film.

The new sci-fi thriller will be set in an alternate America of the near future, where the Government sanctions the annual “Purge,” legalizing criminal activities for a 12-hour period. Director James DeMonaco, who has also directed the previous two installments of the film, will write and direct “Purge 3.” He has yet to outline how Grillo’s character will progress in the new film.

In “The Purge: Anarchy,” his character sets out to take revenge during the Purge, but he eventually ends up helping a group of people who become homeless because of the event. The newest film, set to be released on July 1, 2016. The production is scheduled to begin next month, according to Variety.

“The Purge: Anarchy” received mixed reviews from the critics but went on to earn $110.6 million worldwide and is considered a success. It was made on a budget of $9 million, according to IMDB. Ejogo, Zach Gilford, Kiele Sanchez and Michael K. Williams starred in the film. It is not clear whether they will also return, like Grillo, to star in “Purge 3.”

Grillo is currently filming for TV series “Kingdom,” which is set to premiere this fall.
