A French diplomat was arrested in Bangalore, Tuesday, for allegedly raping his three-and-a-half-year-old daughter. He would be produced in a city court later in the day, the police said.

Pascal Mazurier, deputy head of chancery at the Consulate General of France in Bangalore, was arrested after a complaint was lodged last week by his wife, Suja Jones Mazurier, who is an Indian national, accusing her husband of repeatedly raping their minor daughter. The envoy was arrested after France's foreign ministry confirmed Monday that the accused didn't enjoy diplomatic immunity.

His arrest followed protests by rights groups in front of the French consulate in the city.

His wife filed a police complaint after a medical test confirmed that the girl had been raped and the evidence included traces of sperm. The police detained Mazurier for questioning last week, but released him to the French officials.

The couple has three children in total, all of them French citizens.
