The second largest economy in the euro zone suffered the dismay of the coldest winter in decades in the first quarter and the slowing of government spending and support.

The economy expanded a modest 0.1% in the first three months of the year according to the preliminary estimates. The recovery on a quarterly basis slowed severely compared to the four quarter's 0.5% expansion which already was revised to the downside from the initial reported 0.6% expansion.

On the year the expansion is 1.2% rising off the previous drop of 0.3%.
