It’s been nearly three years since Future and Ciara called off their engagement, but looking back on the relationship, it’s easy to see the “Mask Off” rapper was a different person. During his time with Ciara, Future released the album “Honest,” a project which critics said lacked his signature sound.

Now, during an interview with Billboard, the “HNDRXX” rapper reveals how he changed during that time. Known for his lyrics about prescription pills and codeine, Future said while dating Ciara, he tried to change himself to adapt to the relationship, which included cutting back on drugs.

According to Future, he felt he was turning into a “cornball.” The rapper told the publication, “They had me going the cornball route!” But while the two have had a rocky relationship since they went separate ways, Future says he’s in a better place now.

“I feel like everything happened for a reason. I’m happy with life now. I’m happy with life, period, even with the end of a relationship.” Still, the rapper seems to hold some resentment towards the singer, saying he needs someone who won’t give up on him.

“I’m just not going to settle for anything, you know? Even in my life now, I know I can be a better person. I ain’t giving up on myself, so if you give up on me, I ain’t got nothing else to say for you. Because if you give up on something that’s real, it wasn’t real to you,” he said.

Following their breakup, Ciara began dating Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. The two are now married. The singer says Wilson was everything she was looking for in a man, telling Us magazine, “I wanted a God-fearing man with a very fun spirit who loves kids and would really, truly care for me.”

Since releasing “Honest” in 2014, Future has gone on to release four albums, including the platinum-selling “DS2” in 2015 and the gold-selling “EVOL” in 2016. In the span of one week in February, the rapper released two No. 1 albums, becoming the first artist in the history of the Billboard 200 chart to have two projects debut at No. 1 in successive weeks.
