Game of Thrones death
David Goldblatt paid $20,000 to create a character that is destined to be killed off by George R.R. Martin in "A Song of Ice and Fire." HBO/Game of Thrones

Is it just us, or are people dying to … well, die, in the critically acclaimed series “Game of Thrones”? According to reports, fans of George R.R. Martin’s fantasy series are leaping at the chance to be brutally killed off in “A Song of Ice and Fire.” All they have to do is create any character of their liking and cough up $20,000. And if there’s one thing we know about Martin, he’ll make your generous donation worth it.

Curious as to who would pay such a staggering amount for the chance to be killed off? Well, his name is David Goldblatt and he is the product specialist for the social media plaform, Facebook. Now this is something we "like" a lot!

ABC News revealed that the 30-year-old San Francisco-based Facebook employee has paid 20 big ones to create a Valyrian character, which will be added and killed off in the next Martin novel.

For those who don’t know, Valyria is a ruined city in Essos and the ancestral home of House Targaryen. The long-dead city was famous for having people with purple eyes and hair of silver-gold or platinum. They are also known for their Valyrian steel blades, which is what Ned Stark’s “Ice” was made from.

"You read some piece of fiction and for whatever reason you think one particular character or race is cool – and for whatever reason, I thought the Valyrians were cool. I’m hoping in future books we get to see more of them," Goldblatt explained to ABC News of why he chose a Valyrian character.

"I’m just lucky enough to be in a position to do this," Goldblatt said of the pricey prize. "Obviously, the money is going to charity, so it’s an added bonus. I didn’t immediately seek to help wolf sanctuaries, but the more I read about the charities, I learned it was a worthwhile cause."

That's right, the donation will be used toward a crowdfunding campaign for a New Mexico food bank and a wolf sanctuary. Hmm, we wonder if Martin meant direwolf sanctuary.

It was reported that by donating any amount, one lucky fan (and a friend) will be entered to win a trip to Santa Fe and get the chance to sightsee during a helicopter ride with Mr. Martin himself.

“We can talk about dragons, direwolves, ‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘Song of Ice and Fire,’ wildcards, anything you want to talk about,” the creator announced. Think he’ll give any hints as to who Jon Snow’s mother is?
