More details are emerging from the set of “Game of Thrones” Season 5. The latest news comes in the form of newly released pictures showing some of the new characters the HBO show will introduce. The pictures, which are sure to get readers of the George R.R. Martin novels excited, show a group of women called the Sand Snakes.

Fans of the book series know the Sand Snakes from the “Dance of Dragons” novel. The women are the illegitimate daughters of Prince Oberyn Martell (Pedro Pascal). They all share the name Sand, which is the family name taken on by children born out of wedlock in their homeland of Dorne, just how the North uses “Snow” (as in Jon Snow). The snake moniker is a reference to their father’s “Red Viper” nickname.

The Sand Snakes will be arriving on the scene in Season 5 as a result of their father’s death at the hands (very literally) of Gregor Clegane (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson). In the books, the daughter’s urge Dorne to declare war in retribution for their father’s death, carrying out secret missions to advance their cause and agitating the people of Dorne. Some of them are eventually imprisoned for their warmongering.

“Game of Thrones” has already cast many of the daughters for Season 5. Rosabell Laurenti Sellers (“The Whistleblower”) will play Tyene Sand, Jessica Henwick (“Silk”) will play Nymeria Sand, and Keisha Castle-Hughes (“Whale Rider”) will play Obara Sand. All three will appear in the Season 5 premiere.

The Sand Snakes are part of the show’s increasingly large universe, which is growing in Season 5 to include Dorne. The show is shooting in Ireland for scenes set in the new southern kingdom. “Game of Thrones” Season 5 is set to premiere in April 2015.
