"Game of Thrones" Season 6 will feature a large-scale battle, but no one yet knows who will be involved. HBO

Throughout its 50 episodes, HBO’s “Game of Thrones” has been no stranger to showing its audience large-scale battle scenes, and it seems Season 6 will be no exception. However, with one of the minds behind the Emmy-winning series telling fans to expect a bigger fight than they’ve ever seen before, the question now becomes: Who will be involved?

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, writer and producer Bryan Cogman revealed that the upcoming sequence is going to be bigger, but stopped short of giving any details as to who fans can expect to see crossing swords when the time comes.

“It’s definitely the biggest [action sequence yet],” he told the outlet. “We’ve always wanted to get to a place —story-wise and budget-wise and time-wise and resource-wise — where we would be able to do a proper battle, with one army on one side, one army on another side.”

This isn’t the first time that “Thrones” has promised and delivered on highly impactful battle scenes. The first was in [SPOILER ALERT] the penultimate episode of Season 2, “Blackwater,” in which an army led by Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane) attempted to siege King’s Landing. The hit HBO drama did it again in Season 4 when the wildlings attacked Castle Black in “Watchers on the Wall.” Things took a turn for the supernatural in the Season 5 episode “Hardhome,” in which white walkers attacked the otherwise peaceful haven of wildling refugees just as Jon Snow (Kit Harington) arrived to offer them sanctuary behind the wall. Any fan familiar with the scale of those battles is likely stunned that the minds behind Season 6 are promising to trump them.

Although the new episodes don’t start up until April 24, there’s already a surprising amount of battle-ready armies poised for a potential fight. The most immediate example that jumps to mind are the Lannisters and the Dornish. After Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) failed to rescue Cersei Lannister’s (Lena Headey) daughter from the Dornish people’s captivity, she’ll likely do everything in her power to seek revenge on the faction she feels wronged her. However, the Lannisters aren’t the strong family they used to be now that their money supply is waning and they’ve lost control of the capital city to the religious cult led by the High Sparrow (Jonathan Pryce).

After her now infamous walk of shame, the most recent Season 6 trailer features the Lannister daughter choosing violence against the cult. However, what’s being promised here is a large-scale battle, and so far the High Sparrow and his men have only been a nuisance on the streets of King’s Landing. So, it’s unlikely they’ll be anything more than what the Mountain (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson) can handle.

Perhaps then, the big scene in question takes place on the other side of the world, where Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) has been captured by the faction she once ruled, the Dothraki. In the time since she last saw the horse-rider army, she collected a new faction of soldiers loyal to her, the Unsullied. According to the “Game of Thrones” news website Watchers On The Wall, actor Joe Naufahu has been cast to play the new leader of the Dothraki army, Khal Jhaqo. It’s unclear how the new leader of the army will feel about their absentee Khaleesi, but if his thoughts on her are negative, it may open the door for a large-scale battle between the Unsullied and the Dothraki.

Fans will just have to wait until “Game of Thrones” Season 6 premieres on April 24 to know if the battle will be between existing players or if new threats will join the ever-evolving chess game that is the world of Westeros.
