“Game of Thrones” is slated to come to a close at the end of Season 8 — a fact many are still struggling to wrap their minds around. Fans of the HBO original series have been hold their breath, awaiting an announcement from the network about a follow up series to no avail. Executives at HBO have been clear, however, that it is not out of the question.

In fact, Variety reported that the network’s original programming president said they would be “foolish” not to explore the idea of creating another series in the “Game of Thrones” universe. At the Television Critics Association press tour Casey Bloys revealed that the potential spinoff was nothing more than an idea at this stage, adding that they had no script nor had they nailed down an idea yet. Bloys went on to say that there are no shortage of areas for HBO to explore more, it’s just a matter of finding one that is “very special.”

“All I can say is that we’re exploring it. We don’t have any scripts, we’re not even close to saying, ‘Oh, let’s do this.’ But it’s big enough property that we would be foolish not to look at it.”

HBO executives have been relatively transparent with viewers about the possibility of revisiting the Seven Kingdoms after “Game of Thrones” comes to an end. Last month the network’s CEO, Richard Plepner, revealed that there is a good chance for some kind of “brand expansion” in the future. He also assured dedicated fans that the show’s producers were aware of how “exciting” this prospect is, but said that they are currently focusing all their energy on finishing “Game of Thrones.” Plepner expressed a hope that creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff would be able to finish the show strong before considering the next steps.

“Right now we’re focused on finishing the series with the kind of energy and excitement that everyone has come to expect,” he shared (via The Independent). “We’re going to do that while at the same time parallel processing very embryonic stages of other possibilities.”

In other words, there’s a good possibility that “Game of Thrones” fans will be revisiting their favorite houses and favorite locations at some point in the distant future. Bloys has discussed this on more than one occasion, telling Entertainment Weekly in November 2016, that HBO had been working closely with George R.R. Martin on potential plots. The author of the “A Song of Ice and Fire” novels, from which “Game of Thrones” is based, is said to have created thousands of years of fake history about Westeros and the surrounding areas, which HBO executives believe would be useful in creating a prequel.

“I would say it’s still kind of preliminary ongoing talks,” Bloys said at the time. “There are areas we are exploring, but I wouldn’t point to any one and say, ‘This is what we’re going to do.’”
