Game of Thrones
Fans can read a new chapter of "Winds of Winter." HBO

While fans eagerly await the start of the fourth season of "Game of Thrones" on HBO, fans of "A Song of Ice and Fire" have had to wait since the release of "A Dance With Dragons" in 2011 to find out what's next in the series. As George R.R. Martin works on completing the books, the official "GoT" app, "A World of Ice and Fire," has a new update that includes a detailed map, character profiles and a new chapter of "Winds of Winter."

Warning: Full "Game of Thrones" and "A Song of Ice and Fire" spoilers ahead.

The "GoT" guide is a massive app, 367 MB, that is available to download for Android and iOS devices. For fans of the books and the HBO series, the app has many features to learn more about Westeros and its history. In the latest update, just released Thursday, fans get their first look at a new chapter from "Winds of Winter," told from the perspective of Tyrion Lannister.

The "World of Ice and Fire" app is free-to-try with additional content that can be paid for and unlocked. The majority of characters are locked; Daenerys Targareon, Tyrion Lannister and the Stark family are free, while there is a decent selection of locations available. The biggest selling point will be the free "Winds of Winter" chapter.

"A Dance of Dragons" set up plenty of uncertainty for the future of the "A Song of Ice and Fire." Jon Snow, after being elected commander of the Night's Watch, has allied with Stannis Baratheon and Snow's final point of view chapter has him repeatedly stabbed. It is unclear if Snow survived, and Stannis' fate is also unknown at the end of "A Dance of Dragons" after Snow received a letter from Ramsay Bolton saying Stannis was killed and his army defeated in battle for Winterfell. A sample chapter from "Winds of Winter" released by Martin in 2012, told through the POV of Theon Greyjoy, sees Stannis alive and planning for battle.

Tyrion has escaped to a Pentos, is a passenger on a ship that may contain Aegon Targaryen, the presumed dead son of Elia Martell and Rhaegar Targaryen. They were later captured, along with Penny, by Ser Jorah Marmont and the trio is later sold into slavery. The trio manage to escape following a disease outbreak.

Daenerys is struggling to keep peace in Meeren, later agreeing to a political marriage and reopening the fighting pit. She also is having trouble controlling her dragons, with Drogon escaping while the other dragons, Viserion and Rhaegal, are chained. The opening of the fighting pit sees the return of Drogon and Daenerys' POV chapter ends with her riding her dragon away from Meeren.

War is set to break out in Meeren and that is where the Tyrion chapter from the "Winds of Winter" begin. Fans can expect plenty of scheming and intense action sequences. If one chapter is not enough for fans, Martin still has the Arianne chapter from "Winds of Winter" chapter available on his homepage.

"Game of Thrones" Season 4 premieres on April 6 on HBO, but there is no set release date for "Winds of Winter."
