Game of Thrones season 5 spoilers
Who is Jon Snow's mother? "Game of Thrones" character teases a pretty ridiculous theory. HBO/Game of Thrones

Who is John Snow’s mother? That seems to be the question every “Game of Thrones” fan has been asking himself since diving into George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire.” But after a recent interview with TV Guide it looks like the mystery surrounding everyone’s favorite bastard is more complicated than you imagined.

Kit Harington, who plays Snow on the hit HBO series, teased fans that his character is actually the love child of Cher and Brian May. And although we found his response rather amusing, it did raise the question of whether we should be questioning who is Snow’s father is as well as his mother.

Sean Bean, who took on the beloved character Ned Stark, recently revealed during an interview with Vulture that he’s “obviously not Jon Snow’s dad.” This seemingly harmless quote started a frenzy among “GoT” fans, causing even the most devoted readers to re-evaluate everything they once thought.

So, if Ned isn’t Jon Snow’s father – then who is? Luckily for us, die-hard fans have taken a magnifier to Martin’s books, attempting to retrace their steps and track down any clues regarding who the parents of Jon Snow really are. And they’ve stumbled upon a theory that may just leave you speechless.

It’s been rumored that Ned isn’t Jon Snow’s father -- but his uncle. That’s right, according to fans, the alleged bastard son of Ned is actually his nephew and the true-born son of Ned’s sister Lyanna, who was kidnapped by Prince Rhaegar Targaryen when she was just 14.

Lyanna’s capture is what sparked Robert’s Rebellion. Robert Baratheon, Ned’s best friend, was set to wed Lyanna prior to her kidnapping. He and Ned then made it their mission to retrieve Lyanna from the Tower of Joy in Dorne. But when Ned finally found his sister, she was dying in a scene that hinted she had just given birth. Considering she was 16 at her death, it makes it physically impossible for Robert to be the father of her child (but we can debate this, considering wilder things have happened in “GoT”).

“Promise me, Ned,” was the last thing Lyanna said to her brother before dying, words that haunted Ned until his untimely death.

What could the promise be? Some fans believe that Lyanna had asked Ned to raise her son as his own considering he wouldn’t survive in Robert’s kingdom as part Targaryen. Because Ned had such a deep love for his sister, he agreed despite the effect on his new marriage to Catelyn Stark. We always knew Ned was an honorable man! No wonder Ned never wanted to discuss the woman who he allegedly had Jon with.
