General Electric (GE) issued a voluntary dishwasher recall on Thursday due to fire hazard, affecting more than 1.3 million dishwashers in the U.S. But how do you know if your dishwasher is one affected under the recall? CSPC.gov

General Electric (GE) issued a voluntary dishwasher recall on Thursday due to fire hazard, affecting more than 1.3 million dishwashers in the U.S.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CSPC) said the voluntary recall by GE includes GE, GE Adora, GE Eterna, GE Profile and Hotpoint dishwashers.

The recalled dishwashers run the risk of fire, after it was discovered that the heating elements located inside of the machines have failed, causing fires. According to GE, there have been seven fires reported, three causing "extensive property damage" though there has been no injuries.

The dishwashers affected were sold across the nation from March 2006 through August 2009, costing between $350 and $850.

"The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the General Electric Company (GE) have announced a voluntary recall of 1.3 million Hotpoint, GE and GE Profile, GE Eterna and GE Adora plastic tub dishwashers, manufactured between March 2006 through July 2006, and November 2006 through April 2008," the Fairfield, Conn.-based company said in a statement. "These dishwashers are plastic tub dishwashers with front controls. They were sold in black, white, bisque, stainless steel and CleanSteel exterior colors and finishes. You can submit your model and serial number below or call the GE Hotline to determine if your dishwasher is included in the recall."

CPSC chairwoman Inez Tenenbaum said that people should terminate use of the dishwasher effective immediately.

"My message to consumers is to immediately stop using these recalled dishwashers and disconnect the power supply to the unit," Tenenbaum said at the National Press Club Thursday.

So how do you know if your dishwasher is one affected under the recall?

The recalled dishwashers come in black, white, bisque, stainless steel and CleanSteel, the company said, and has particular model numbers, which you can view below. The company also has a search engine in which a user can input their model and serial numbers to determine if the dishwasher was affected under the recall.

GE said it will provide a free repair to all consumers with dishwashers affected by the recall. Customers can use a $75 rebate from GE in order to purchase a new GE front-control plastic tub dishwasher or a $100 rebate for a new GE front-control stainless tub dishwasher or GE Profile top control dishwasher.
