Following the awaited conference call between Merkel, Sarkozy and Papandreou the statement reassured the Greek commitment to fiscal consolidation and the steady support from Germany and France.

President Nicolas Sarkozy and Chancellor Angela Merkel said they are convinced that Greece will remain a member of the euro area to dismiss speculation that the deep fiscal crisis will force Athens to drop the euro.

The leaders stressed on Greece to importance of implementing the reforms needed to meet the fiscal goals set under the July 21 bailout plan and they insured Papandreou is committed to meet the goals and continue with the fiscal consolidation.
