Glee graduation

“Glee” Season 6 is adding some new teenagers to the musical comedy show. It appears Season 6 will definitely return to McKinley High School, despite almost the entire cast having moved out of Lima, Ohio. The final season of “Glee” is casting five new sophomores, but don’t expect a repeat of the last class. When “Glee” Season 4 started, the new sophomores seemed much like Rachel, Finn, Puck and Quinn. This new class seems to be completely different, with a gay football player, a straight male cheerleader and a chubby underdog. Get the scoop on the new kids, first reported by TV Line, below:

Gay Football Star: Spencer is another star athlete and fantastic singer. He might not have the same problems that singing athletes at McKinley used to have, though. The casting notice calls him “post-Glee” gay. He might be gay, but no one messes with the "football stud" because they know he can toss them in a dumpster, as well as a touchdown-scoring pass.

Underdog: Roderick has to deal with the fact that he isn’t the most attractive guy. Though he has “a voice like Otis Redding,” the singer struggles with both his weight and shyness.

Wannabe Warbler: Jane wanted to join the Warblers, but since Dalton Academy is an all-boys school, she had to settle for New Directions. Jane is described as “righteous, ambitious and unconventionally pretty.” It sounds like she’ll bring the laughs to the choir room, too. She doesn’t have a sense of humor, which often leads to her being unintentionally hilarious.

Cheerleading Twins: Mason and Madison are on the Cheerios, so it makes sense that the twins are very upbeat and optimistic. They’re also described as “extremely weird.” Mason is often perceived as gay, but he’s actually a straight male cheerleader.

Fans might be surprised by this news, since McKinley High School cut off funding for the glee club last year. Also, “Glee” season 6 will have only 13 episodes, so fans are wondering how much time will be devoted to the newbies. They want to see the characters who have been around since the beginning, like Kurt and Rachel, get a proper sendoff.

Adding new cast members at McKinley will help bring the story back to where it started in Season 1, advocating for the arts in high school, which is showrunner Ryan Murphy's goal.

“We’re working on the last season now, and it really feels like it’s getting back to its roots, which I love,” Murphy told TV Line. “I’m sort of reinvigorated about it. It’s getting back to what I was initially interested in with the show, which was arts in school. The last season is really about the importance of arts education in our high schools.”

New students don't necessarily mean less screen time for the graduates. The new characters could easily be involved with the older characters. Murphy told E! Online, “It really is a lovely, fitting season that really dwells on the original people that were on the show and what happens to them and how they give back.” Funding or running the glee club is certainly one way McKinley alumni could be giving back.

“Glee” Season 6 will air next winter on Fox. How do you feel about the new characters? Will they add to the storyline or take screen time away from older characters? Sound off in the comments.
