Google’s Gmail Web-based email service went down Friday, also affecting other services including Google Plus, which now powers YouTube’s comments section. Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) commented at 2:12 p.m. EST regarding the outage:

We're investigating reports of an issue with Gmail. We will provide more information shortly.

Google reported the outage on its Apps Status Dashboard, as users around the world began complaining about the error: Temporary Error (500). All access to Gmail is locked, preventing Web-based users from accessing their email.

Users accessing Gmail on mobile devices such as Android or iPhone are unable to send or receive emails, but can view messages in their inbox. Gmail may be briefly accessible, but the sending and receiving of messages is impaired for most users. More information on the Gmail outage as it develops.
