Gold Fields Limited , the world's number four gold producer, said on Wednesday that fourth-quarter production is expected to be 4.5 percent higher than the previous quarter.

Gold Fields said production at its South African operations is expected to be nearly seven percent higher.

South African production for Q4, 2008 is expected to be up by approximately 6.6 percent against the production achieved for Q3, 2008, which is better than the previous guidance of an improvement of between 2 and 4 percent, due mainly to improved quality mining at Beatrix, Gold Fields said in a statement.

Shares in Gold Fields rose 3.37 percent to 92 rand by 0745 GMT.

Gold Fields said attributable production from its international mines is expected to be flat while preliminary indications were that group cash costs in dollar terms will be similar to the previous quarter.

The group said its Cerro Corona Project in Peru is on track to commence production and the shipment of concentrate in the first quarter of 2009. (Reporting by Marius Bosch; Editing by Paul Bolding)
