Gold and silver prices rose modestly in electronic trading late Thursday, helping lift shares of some companies that mine the precious metals.

Not all companies mining precious metals rose late Thursday but a number did as the prices of their commodities added value.

The price of gold for December delivery, which had settled at $1,668.50, was up slightly to $1,669.60. Silver, which closed at $31.67, rose to $31.87.

Among large gold miners that rose in after-hours trading were Goldcorp Inc. was up 0.41 percent, Agnico-Eagle Mines Ltd. and Gold Fields Ltd. both added 0.24 percent and Eldorado Gold Corp. gained 0.71 percent.

Several silver miners also posted after-hours gains: Silver Wheaton Corp. was up 0.61 percent; Hecla Mining Co. added 0.69 percent.
