Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) announced Tuesday that it had acquired GrandCentral Communications, a start-up Internet-based phone service.

Financial details of the transaction were not made available.

GrandCentral is a service that allows users to integrate their existing phone numbers and voice mailboxes into one account, which can be accessed from the web.

We think GrandCentral's technology fits well into Google's efforts to provide services that enhance the collaborative exchange of information between our users, said Wesley Chan, a Google product manager, in a statement.

Google will continue to support existing users without interruption. However Google will issue only a limited number of invitations for new test customers while the services moves Grand Central's technology to its network.
