Google's chief in Brazil said the Internet giant will employ strategies to stop child pornography and hate crimes on the social networking Website used in the region.

Alexandre Hohagen, Google's head in Brazil, told the Brazilian Senate panel that Google will use all efforts to block offensive material from popular Orkut Web site, www.orkut.com/.

Federal prosecutors said last year, August, that Google had failed to comply with requests to provide information about users who spread child pornography and hate speech against black people, Jews and homosexuals on Orkut.

Orkut Web site has over 60 million users, worldwide of which 55 percent are Brazilians.

Hohagen promised that Google will install filters to stop the spread of child pornography and keep records of users who access or spread illicit materials for a period of six months.

According to Google, the new measures will be effective by June this year.

The Brazilian senate hailed Google's move and commended the Internet giant's cooperation in the move to stop pornography and other illicit materials on the Web.
