Even villains have mothers, and “Gotham” is making sure audiences know that. Fox’s Batman origins show just added Carol Kane to play the mother of Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor), Gertrud Kapelput. Dedicated fans know that Cobblepot eventually became archvillain The Penguin.

Kane’s character will debut in episode 2 this fall, and she doesn’t exactly sound like the loving mother of the year. TV Line described Gertrud as “a proud and faded beauty with delusions of grandeur.”

The role is recurring, and audiences will likely get to see the mother-son dynamic of a villain. Maybe Oswald’s mother influenced what Variety called a “sadistic lust for power.” Oswald will appear in the episode 1 of “Gotham,” but he isn’t quite a major villain yet. The young character is working for a gangster called Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith) and is described as a “low-level psychopath.” It sounds like he has a long way to go before becoming The Penguin, and audiences have to wonder how his mother influences the transformation.

"Gotham" is still expanding the cast of supporting characters. TV Line reported that Disney Channel alum Kyle Massey is joining the drama as well. Massey will play Mackey, a homeless and orphaned teenager. Mackey could be hanging out with another neglected teenager on the streets of Gotham, Selina Kyle (Carmen Bicondova), a.k.a. Catwoman. Kyle Massey's Mackey will be a recurring character.

“Gotham” is a Batman origins story that doesn't focus on the hero. Instead it looks at the start of famous DC villains and Commissioner Gordon.

“Gotham” will air on Mondays at 8 p.m. EDT. Fox has yet to announce a premiere date. Take a look at the full casting roundup for the new drama:
