Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith) may not bother Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) much longer. Pinkett Smith announced her departure on “Live with Kelly and Michael” Friday.

“Gotham” Season 1 has been all about introducing Batman’s most famous enemies, but the show has taken the time to introduce one original villain, Fish Mooney. When “Live with Kelly and Michael” co-host Kelly Ripa asked about “Gotham” Season 2, Pinkett Smith hesitated just a second before revealing that she wasn’t signed for next year.

“I don’t think so, no,” Smith said. “You know, I signed for a year, and now the year is up, but there are some great things coming ahead on ‘Gotham,’ believe you me.”

The actress didn’t make it clear if she asked to leave the show or whether her departure was a creative decision. However, Pinkett Smith’s brief pause before answering the question makes fans wonder if she’s hiding some juicy scoop about her character. The studio’s official statement made it clear she is definitely covering up something.

After being asked to comment on Pinkett Smith’s exit, Warner Bros. replied by releasing a short statement that tells audiences absolutely nothing. “Fish Mooney’s storyline takes a lot of interesting twists and turns into the finale of season one of Gotham,” a representative said, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Of course, Fish is always in an interesting predicament on “Gotham.” She was recently imprisoned in a place that illegally harvests organs for the black market, and the donors aren’t usually willing participants. Fish even took out her own eyeball in an act of rebellion. While the Dollmaker (Colm Feore) just accepted her as a partner, Fish Mooney’s luck never seems to hold for long. Could Pinkett Smith’s departure mean Fish’s death is coming?

“Gotham” audiences likely won’t have that question answered until the finale. However, when “Live with Kelly and Michael” co-host Michael Strahan mentioned a return to “Gotham,” the actress appeared open to the idea. “Yeah, she could show up anywhere, you never know!” she said.

While many viewers will be disappointed to lose a villain, it isn’t as if “Gotham” has a shortage of bad guys. They’ve introduced the majority of Batman’s most infamous enemies, including the Scarecrow and, most recently, the Joker.
