Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) was an idealistic cop who wanted to save Gotham City from criminals. But unfortunately, the idealist in him was chewed up and spit out by the people he swore to protect. This Season 3, Gordon will be quite different from when fans saw him last.

In the new promo released by Fox, Gordon’s former partner and best friend Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue) is seen trying to convince him to save the city once again. He tells Gordon, “You’re a cop in everything but name.”

But there’s no swaying a jaded Gordon. “Saving Gotham’s not my job anymore,” he simply replies.

The scene quickly flashes to Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith) and Selina Kyle (Carmen Bicondova) walking with a throng of people behind them. It then shifts to Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) talking to his butler Alfred J. Pennyworth (Sean Pertwee). “I do this, there’s no turning back,” says Bruce. “No there isn’t,” Alfred replies.

But with villains left and right trying to take control of the city, Gordon acknowledges: “I don’t think Gotham’s running out of monsters anytime soon.”

One villain Gordon definitely has to watch out for is his former fiancée Barbara Kean (Erin Richards). While he thinks there is hope for the character to revert to good, “I don’t think [their] relationship can be healed,” McKenzie told Blastr.

“In terms of Barbara, I don’t think she’ll suddenly become this beacon of light. She’s not going to become Michelle Obama or something like that, but I don’t think anyone is irredeemable in Gotham,” he said.

The subtitle of “Gotham” Season 3 is called “Mad City: Better to Reign in Hell…” and it replaces the “Heroes Will Fall” campaign that was earlier intended for the season, according to Screen Rant. It follows Season 2’s “Rise of the Villains” and “Wrath of the Villains.”

“Gotham” will return on Monday, Sept. 19, at 8 p.m. on Fox.
