Benedict Samuel’s Jervis Tetch, also known as the Mad Hatter, will make his first appearance in “Gotham” Season 3, episode 3.

The episode synopsis shared by Comic Book reveals why Jervis is in Gotham City, and it also shared a certain well-loved villain’s plans to rule the city.

“Hypnotist Jervis Tetch/Mad Hatter (Benedict Samuel) arrives in Gotham to search for his sister, Alice (guest star Naian Gonzalez Norvind), and hires Gordon to help find her. Meanwhile, Penguin decides to run for mayor and Bruce’s doppelganger begins to channel him, causing some confusion around town,” reads the synopsis.

Earlier, Robin Lord Taylor, the actor who portrays Penguin in the show, said that his character is really beefing up his alliances this season.

“In light of what happened to Penguin last year, losing both his parents, being cast out by everyone he trusted, he has a big hole in his life,” Taylor told Variety of Penguin. “He needs allies, he needs people by his side, so his connection with Nygma (Cory Michael Smith) falls right into that.”

In the first episode of Season 3, Penguin even paid Nygma a visit in Arkham Asylum. Penguin told Nygma that he needed his brains to defeat Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith), who has obtained a special power because of Dr. Hugo Strange’s (B.D. Wong) crazy experiments. But Nygma simply told him not to worry because “penguins eat fish.”

Meanwhile, co-executive producer John Stephens told TV Insider that Penguin and Nygma will “become a real duo for the first half of the season,” much to the displeasure of Penguin’s henchman Butch Gillian (Drew Powell). The two don’t get along because they’re oil and water, and Butch will even compete with Nygma to become Penguin’s right-hand man.

“Gotham” airs every Monday at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.
