Ed Nygma (Cory Michael Smith), L, and Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor) are not yet done fighting in “Gotham” Season 4. FOX

Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor), also known as the Penguin in “Gotham,” has his hands full this Season 4 especially with the introduction of the villain, Professor Pyg (Michael Cerveris) and his fake friend, Sofia Falcone (Crystal Reed).

With all that he has to deal with, his rivalry with Ed Nygma (Cory Michael Smith), also known as the Riddler, has taken a backseat. It also does not help that Nygma isn’t himself right now, since his brain was negatively affected in his ice block prison.

When asked what’s next for Cobblepot and Nygma, Taylor said they have to be in equal footing first before going head to head again. “Well right now, where we're at; Nygma isn’t himself,” Taylor told Comic Book. “He’s changed his personality and is in some scattered place. As he was unfrozen from the block of ice, Part of him detached from himself, and he’s been sort of trying to find it.”

"Oswald has been through this before as well, as we saw in season two. Having been released from Arkham completely different person, he doesn't know where he is. And the thing that Nygma did for him then was he reminded him of who he is, he gave him back his personality, his soul. And I think we’re always gonna sort of see that kind of dance,” he continued.

Taylor added that Cobblepot and Nygma won’t end up killing each other, and that responsibility would have to fall on someone else. “It's like the classic hunter going out somewhere and seeing a beautiful animal, and then deciding it's a worthy opponent, and then deciding not to kill it because it would be a shame,” he explained. “Oswald has yet to really find someone who is weirdly a friend and an enemy at the same time. They just have a very fundamental connection.”

For now, Cobblepot will be forming a partnership with Jerome Valeska (Cameron Monaghan). As to what they will be doing together, executive producer Bryan Wynbrandt teased: “We have an awesome story for him… it really goes to a really interesting place and has ripple effects not just in this season but hopefully, knock on wood, next season as well.”

“Gotham” Season 4 airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. EDT on Fox.
