Jerome Valezka (Cameron Monaghan) is not the true Joker in ‘Gotham’ Season 4. FOX

Out of all the villains in the realm of “Gotham,” Cameron Monaghan’s Jerome Valezka, who has gained notoriety as the Joker, has got to be one of the most popular.

Surprisingly, executive producer and writer Bryan Wynbrandt told Screen Rant that Jerome isn’t actually the Joker, since he is merely their “homage” to the villain.

“He’s obviously not the Joker himself, although [he] clearly seems to be the impetus that eventually creates the Joker,” he explained. “The more that we see him, the more he carves out his own path I’d say. I wouldn’t say he becomes more the Joker, but the Jerome character continues to evolve.”

This Season 4, the Jerome will once again make an appearance and even form an unexpected alliance with Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor), also known as the Penguin.

“You're totally gonna see him this year,” co-executive producer John Stephens told Comic Book. “You're gonna see him in a new position this year, and he’s gonna form an alliance with a character who he has not been near at any time soon.”

“Essentially, we're gonna see him and Oswald Cobblepot come closer,” Stephens teased.

Together, the Joker and the Penguin will go head to head with another villain team-up. Ed Nygma (Cory Michael Smith), who managed to escape his ice block prison, will be getting some assistance from the zombie Solomon Grundy (Drew Powell). They will also join forces with a very different Dr. Leslie “Lee” Thompkins (Morena Baccarin).

Another friendship that was formed this season belongs to Selina Kyle (Carmen Bicondova) and Tabitha Galavan (Jessica Lucas). The two had little interaction over the past few seasons, but now, it is Tabitha teaching Selina the ropes so she could transition into the Catwoman. They have even agreed to join Barbara Kean (Erin Richards) in her new firearms venture. “Those skills that you associate with grown-up Catwoman, we’re going to see Tabitha start teaching her at the beginning of this year,” Stephens told TV Insider.

“Gotham” Season 4 will premiere on Sept. 21 on Fox.
