In the continued attempts to salvage a shaky government and avert a political vacuum, Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou announced the Cabinet overhaul in an attempt to stave off the rebellion in the government and across the nation over the new austerity measures needed to avert default and secure aid.

Defense Minister Evangelos Venizelos will now replace George Papaconstantinou as Finance Minister, as the latter came under heavy pressure on the austerity package announced and now will be the Environment Minister according to the announcement in Athens today by George Petalotis, a government spokesman.

The new finance minister Venizelos will also be the deputy Prime Minister under the changes announced today. Papandreou's cabinet shuffle also included his foreign, interior, labor and justice ministers, reducing the overall number of ministries to 16 from 17.
