“Grey’s Anatomy” won’t be returning to the small screen until the fall. But that hasn’t stopped fans of the hit ABC series from speculating what might go down in Season 12 of the Shonda Rhimes-created medical drama. One of the questions being asked by fans (and us, too!) is -- who will become the new chief of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital?

Sarah Drew, who portrays April Kepner on “Grey’s Anatomy,” set the record straight that her character won’t be following in Richard’s (James Pickens, Jr.) footsteps anytime soon, despite Catherine (Debbie Allen) wanting her fierce daughter-in-law to take on her husband's position.

In the Season 11 finale, audiences noticed Catherine vying for April to become Chief of Surgery. But Drew revealed that the red headed doc would much rather continue saving lives than become absorbed in hospital politics.

“I don’t think she would have any interest in being chief,” Drew admitted during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “There’s so much paperwork. You get buried in the politics of the hospital. All she wants to do is get her hands dirty. She wants to be in traumatic situations, fixing and healing people. She has found herself to be a healer in a pretty dramatic way that goes beyond being a surgeon. There’s something that spiritual for her.”

So, who does that leave in the running for the position of chief? Well, Richard has made it clear that he wants Bailey (Chandra Wilson) to become the Chief of Surgery, a position she’s been eyeing for years. But even though Bailey is more than qualified to take on the role, she still needs to go against another candidate for the position -- a candidate of Catherine's choosing.

“It’s not fair,” Bailey said after learning she’d have to beat someone out for the gig, “to the other candidate … losing by that wide a margin because I am primed for this job. It’s already mine.”

That had us wondering who Catherine will choose as her nominee if April doesn’t want the prestigious title. Perhaps it could be Arizona (Jessica Capshaw), who has proven her worth time and time again. Not to mention, Capshaw has recently extended her contract for three more years with “Grey’s Anatomy,” according to TVLine. That means Arizona has plenty of time to snag the position of Chief of Surgery. Better watch your back, Bailey!

“Grey’s Anatomy” will air its Season 12 premiere on Thursday, September 24, at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC.
