There’s tension among the doctors of Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital and a new addition to the staff is to blame. The faculty — specifically Arizona, Edwards and Jo — was shaken up when Leah Murphy returned to “Grey’s Anatomy” in Season 13, episode 6 but that’s nothing compared to the current drama.

Due to pressure from Catherine (Debbie Allen), Bailey (Chandra Wilson) looks for outside assistance in restructuring during episode 7 of the ABC series. She calls in Dr. Minnick (Marika Dominczyk), who hits the ground running at Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital. She gathers residents in an office to get their honest opinions on the matter, promising that nothing that’s said in their meeting will leave that room. Naturally, it’s not long before the gossip gets out, pitting doctors against one another. The tension worsens when Maggie (Kelly McCreary) discovers a notebook left behind by Dr. Minnick with rankings of all the attendings. Maggie is largely concerned that her ranking is not as high as she’d like it to be, while the others are stressed that the list could have something to do with impending staffing changes.

In addition to gathering opinions from residents, Minnick makes her way inside operating rooms. While it seems as though she is only there to observe, she begins interjecting during procedures and putting pressure on doctors to allow residents to take the lead. This makes several doctors uncomfortable, namely Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Richard (James Pickens Jr.). Both approach Bailey about their discomfort, but their complaints are not well received. Bailey insists that Minnick is not their to take Webbers job, nor is she trying to overstep her bounds. She claims that the visiting doctor was given access to the doctors “however she sees fit,” essentially suggesting that there was nothing that could be done.

Minnick’s many observations reveal struggles between Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) and Owen (Kevin McKidd). The pair continually argue over the best way to approach procedures, what operations need to be done first, which can wait, and more. In time, Amelia cracks, revealing to her husband that it’s not work that’s bothering her but rather their differing views on when to have children. Then she announces, once and for all, that she doesn’t want to have a baby. After their argument she retreats to Meredith’s home, where Alex (Justin Chambers) attempts to turn her away. She is welcomed to stay with them after revealing that she was finally honest with Owen about her feelings.

“Grey’s Anatomy” returns to ABC with a new episode Thursday, Nov. 10, at 8 p.m. EDT.
