Grimes Reveals Why Her And Elon Musk's Son Doesn't Call Her Mom

Grimes shared more details about her and her boyfriend Elon Musk's 16-month-old son X Æ A-Xii.

Grimes, 33, whose real name is Claire Elise Boucher, told Vogue in a video chronicling her 2021 Met Gala preparation that their son calls her by her first name and not "mom" or "mama."

"I think having a baby was a big rebirth for me, like artistically," she was quoted by People as saying. "Being a mother feels weird to say. For some reason, I don't identify with that word."

"Which is also really weird because X, he says 'Claire,' but he doesn't say 'mama,'" she continued. "Which is so... I'm like, 'How are you...?' Like, maybe he can sense my distaste for the word 'mother.'"

Grimes explained she also doesn't know why she has a "distaste for [the word]," stressing that she respects it. "I just, I don't, I can't identify with it, weirdly," she added.

Grimes announced her pregnancy in February 2020. She appeared on a digital cover for Rolling Stone, where she opened up about her thoughts on motherhood and parenting.

She said that her song "So Heavy I Fell Through the Earth" was about "getting pregnant — the sort of tragedy of agreeing to it, even though it's this great thing."

"For a girl, it's sacrificing your body and your freedom. It's a pretty crazy sacrifice and only half of the population has to do it. It was really profound to me when I decided I was going to do it, to actually go through the act of unprotected sex," she told the outlet.

Grimes further explained that she felt like she sacrificed her power when she had "unprotected sex." She added that she felt like she had "capitulated" and that doing so was a "profound commitment."

In the interview, Grimes also gushed over Musk. "I do actually just really love my boyfriend. So I was like, ‘You know, sure,'" she said of the Tesla and SpaceX CEO, adding, "He's just very good at talking me out of my bulls--t. I've learned a lot about controlling my state of mind."

The singer welcomed her son in May last year. X Æ A-Xii is Grimes' first baby, while Musk is also dad to twins Xavier and Griffin, 17, triplets Kai, Saxon and Damian, 15. His first son, Nevada, died of SIDS in 2002 at 10 weeks old.
