Fans may have seen Yara Shahidi’s Zoey Johnson as the smart, confident and even self-absorbed eldest daughter of Dre (Anthony Anderson) and Rainbow (Tracee Ellis Ross) Johnson in “Black-ish.” But things will definitely take a different turn for her when she enters college — an arc that will be showcased in Freeform’s new series, “Grown-ish.”

The latest promo for the “Black-ish” spinoff is out. Though this preview focuses more on what media outlets are raving about the new show, it does feature some snippets about the things that are about to go down when the series premieres next month.

Many scenes show Zoey enjoying her time attending college parties. Since she’s moved on to a higher level of education, the preview also features some moments when the eldest Johnson daughter is attending class with new faces.

The official synopsis for “Grown-ish” reveals that Zoey is going to learn the hard way that things won’t always go her way once she heads off to college. Though she’s attending Southern California University — a school that’s not to far from her Los Angeles home, Zoey won’t really get a lot of bonding moments with her family this time around, and this will certainly bring some dramatic elements to the show.

College life is going to rattle the usually confident Zoey, especially when it comes to her insecurities with boys and relationships. The fear of rejection is going to play a part in the storyline that tackles Zoey’s insecurities and weaknesses, and this is going to be a game changer for the popular teen, according to Variety.

“On ‘Black-ish,’ she was the cool kid at school,” series creator Kenya Barris told TV Line of Shahidi’s character. “She was the pretty girl, she was the popular girl — she’s a fish out of water here. The title is a play on [the idea that] you’re supposed to be an adult, but you’re still definitely a kid.”

Zoey won’t be alone in her new journey though. She’ll find a good friend in her roommate Analisa (Francia Raisa), and she’ll also be befriending a diverse group of students that includes Princess Nomi (Emily Arlook), Luca (Luka Sabbat), Vivek (Jordan Buhat), Aaron (Trevor Jackson) and twins Jazz and Sky (Chloe and Halle Bailey), as per Cinema Blend.

“Grown-ish” Season 1 premieres Jan. 3, Wednesday, at 8/7c on Freeform.
