Marvel's intergalactic heroes, the "Guardians of the Galaxy," will be soaring back to the big screen in 2017. Production on the sequel, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2," is official underway and more details are slowly rolling in about the latest film in the Marvel Universe, including returning heroes, fresh characters and an all-new soundtrack.

According to Marvel, Marvel Studios has begun principal photography at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, on "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2." The highly anticipated film is expected to hit theaters May 5, 2017.

Peter Quill/Starlord (Chris Pratt), Groot (Vin Diesel), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Drax (Dave Bautista) will all be back for another adventure in the galaxy. The team will be searching for answers to Quill’s true parentage, according to Marvel. There will also be a few familiar villains returning, including the Collector (Benicio Del Toro) and Yondu Udonta (Michael Rooker). Gamora's sister Nebula (Karen Gillan) will also be back and Gillan told ComicBookResource that the sisterly relationship with be explored more in the film.

In addition to the heroes from the first film returning, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" will also have some new characters popping up. Joining the cast is Pom Klementieff, who will play Mantis, Elizabeth Debicki and Chris Sullivan. Kurt Russell will also be in the film and he'll reportedly play Quill's father.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" director James Gunn is also returning for the sequel. Gunn, who also had a part in writing the script to the first film, has penned the screenplay for "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2." Many Marvel fans are wondering if the film will develop the upcoming supervillain Thanos (Josh Brolin) in "The Avengers: Infinity War." However, Gunn told ComicBook.com that the film won't really get into the Infinity Stones that Thanos is after, but it's still possible the film could continue to build towards the next "Avengers" film.

One of the most popular parts of the first film was the soundtrack, "Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1." Songs like Blue Swede's "Hooked on a Feeling," The Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" and Redbone's "Come and Get Your Love" appeared on "Awesome Mix Vol. 1." For the sequel, there's going to be an all-new soundtrack with even more catchy classics.
