“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” seems to be delighting audiences, and fans know that it isn’t the last time the ragtag team will unite. A third movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise has been confirmed, and we already have some early information on it.

James Gunn — The main man behind the first two films will return to write and direct “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.”

An Ending — Gunn revealed that he has shaped “Guardians” as a trilogy. That means the next one will feel much more final. “It will conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and help catapult both old and new Marvel characters into the next ten years and beyond,” Gunn revealed on Facebook.

Timeline — “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” actually takes place in 2014, just a couple months after the first movie, but there will be a much bigger time jump between the second and third films. We know that “Avengers: Infinity War” will take place four years after the second movie, and “Vol. 3” takes place sometime after that. So expect the Guardians to do a little bit of evolving between movies.

Guardians of the Galaxy
“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” is still a few years away, but we already have a few spoilers for it. Marvel Studios

Villains — As those who stayed after the credits in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” know, Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki) wants revenge on Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) and his pals. She is creating something called “Adam” to destroy them. As previously reported, comic book character Adam Warlock will be introduced. The genetically engineered human has super strength, flying abilities and can manipulate energy. He’ll prove to be a difficult enemy for the Guardians — if he listens to Ayesha.

Returning Characters — While much of the cast is still unconfirmed for “GotG Vol. 3,” it sounds like Gunn would like to bring back Mantis and Taserface in addition to Ayesha. “I absolutely plan on bringing Elizabeth Debicki back,” he told IGN. “She’s actually one of my favorite actors I’ve ever worked with. I think on this movie between her, Pom Klementieff who plays Mantis, and Chris Sullivan who plays Taserface, they really were three of the best actors I’ve ever worked with and were all such a joy on this film to deal with that I would love to deal with them again.”

No More Baby Groot — Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) is growing up. The post-credits scene showed him as a messy teenager, and considering how much time passes before “Infinity War,” it seems like Groot is probably going to be fully grown in “Vol. 3.”

Awesome Mix Vol. 3 — Peter Quill was not given another “Awesome Mix” cassette tape, sadly. That’s probably for the best since Ego (Kurt Russell) destroyed his Walkman anyway. However, another parental figure, Yondu (Michael Rooker), gave Peter a Zune, the Microsoft MP3 player that was discontinued in 2012. He claimed it was what all the humans were listening to these days, and Peter was amazed by the ability to hold 300 songs. It’s pretty much guaranteed that we’ll hear some more great classic rock tunes in the sequel.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” does not have a release date yet.
