A Twitter account belonging to the Fox News network in the U.S. was hacked by a group who falsely declared that President Barack Obama had died.

The @foxnewspolitics feed stated: BREAKING NEWS: @BarackObama assassinated, 2 gunshot wounds have proved too much.

The messages suggested Obama was shot and killed while campaigning in Iowa.

The first post stated: Just regained full access to our Twitter and email. Happy 4th. The second message declared: @BarackObama has just passed. The President is dead. A sad 4th of July, indeed. President Barack Obama is dead

The hackers subsequently wrote that Obama was shot twice in the lower pelvic area and in the neck; shooter unknown. Bled out.

The messages started to appear at 7:00 British Summer Time (2 a.m. EDT) on the morning of July 4. At least two hours thereafter the postings still had not been removed.

Someone identifying themselves as “The Script Kiddies” have reportedly taken responsibility for the malicious postings, according to BBC. Their account has since been suspended.

The hoaxsters finished by wishing Joseph Biden luck as the new president.

In such a time of madness, there's light at the end of tunnel, they wrote.

Fox News said it is investigating the incident, and apologized for any distress the false tweets may have created.
