Texas police said on Wednesday that they have discovered human remains near an airport approximately 40 miles from where 13-year-old Hailey Dunn reportedly disappeared just after Christmas 2010.

Authorities in Big Spring, Texas said that human remains were found near McMahon Wrinkle Airpark on Tuesday afternoon, reported ABC. The airpark is only about mile from home of the mother of Shawn Adkins. Adkins was Dunn's mother's boyfriend at the time of her disappearance and was named as a person of interest in the case.

However, police officials were not so sure the remains belonged to Dunn.

Detective Sgt. Tony Everett, a spokesman for Big Spring police said that the remains appear to have been at the scene for a long period of time. At this time, neither the age nor the gender of the remains could be determined, however, police are confident they are human, according to the San Angelo Standard Times.

Everett said that the five people, who are currently missing, were last seen in Big Spring since 1979. The FBI will reportedly process the scene Wednesday morning.

Dunn disappeared Dec. 27, 2010. She was last seen walking to a friend's house and was reported missing by her mother, Billie Jean Dunn, after she discovered she never made it there, reported Fox News.

Billie Jean told officials she got into a fight with her daughter the night of her disappearance and was later arrested for lying to police about the whereabouts of her live-in boyfriend at the time, Adkins. The couple, however, is reportedly no longer together. She was given probation.

Adkins, who was 25 at the time of Hailey Dunn's disappearance, called several people of interest to investigators in January 2011 in Colorado City, reported ABC. Adkins was the last person to have seen Dunn before her disappearance.

Both Billie Jean Dunn and Adkins failed polygraph exam after the initial investigation. Billie Jean Dunn took two exams. The first one ended when investigators discovered she was allegedly under the influence of narcotics. During the second one, police found she was not telling the truth, reported ABC.

Adkins reportedly walked out on two tests before failing the third one. However, Adkins revealed to police that he believed Hailey Dunn could be in Scurry County, Texas, but refused to reveal and further information.

Adkins was never charged with any crimes.

Police records revealed that Adkins made a few interesting statements before Hailey was reported missing. He remarked that hurting a teenager would be like killing a deer, according to a police affidavit obtained by Fox.

The police affidavit also mentioned that in February 2010, police responded to a domestic violence call to the house of Adkins and the Dunns. Adkins allegedly threatened to kill Billie and Hailey during an argument. He later confessed to threatening them.

The police affidavit claims that the couple had a New Year's party days after the 13-year-old disappeared, reported ABC. Dunn denied the claims saying that friends came over for a few drinks.

Both Dunn and Adkins denied having anything to do with Hailey's disappearance.
