Choreographer and Hairspray director Adam Shankman will produce the 82nd Academy Awards live telecast in March with movie executive Bill Mechanic, organizers said on Tuesday.

Shankman is a judge on the TV show, So You Think You Can Dance and has directed the movie musical remake Hairspray in 2007 and The Wedding Planner in 2001. He has also choreographed dance routines for dozens of films.

The last time I was on the (Oscar) show was as a dancer, and to come back as a producer is such an unbelievable honor, Shankman said in a statement.

Mechanic, an independent producer whose credits include the animated movie Coraline that was released in February, is a former chief of FOX and Disney studios.

I think Adam has the perfect background and spirit to make the show both unique and fun to watch, Mechanic said. Together, we will build upon the best traditions from the great shows of the past while helping pave the way to the future.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences did not say who would host the ceremony, which will take place at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood on March 7, 2010 and will be aired in the United States by ABC television.

The last Academy Awards ceremony in February was hosted by film actor Hugh Jackman, also a Broadway veteran, and was highlighted by lavish musical numbers. Audience ratings for the telecast went up to 36.3 million from a record low of 32 million in 2008.
