Halloween is Monday and, for those who still have last-minute Halloween costumes to throw together, it’s time to see how you’ll measure up against the competition.

The “most-searched” and googled costume outfit ideas for 2016 were far and away comic book characters, from heroes to villains. According to a survey by the National Retail Federation and more recent results from a Halloween-themed Google Trends search engine, Batman and “Suicide Squad” characters were the most popular costume options -- so if you were looking for something a little alternative, steer clear of the D.C. characters.

The National Retail Federation published a survey Sept. 26 that revealed what people in the U.S. were planning on dressing up as for Halloween. The survey asked 6,791 consumers total, across all age groups, to determine what they were planning on dressing up as for the holiday.

Both millennials and children selected “superheroes” as their leading costume choices, with children preferring to dress as an action or superhero. Millennials opted for one of the Batman or "Suicide Squad" film characters. These, of course, included Batman, Harley Quinn and the Joker. The majority of adults over the age of 35 seemed to prefer more traditional costumes: Witches ranked number one for this group, with pirates taking second place. Dressing as a witch was the next costume preference for the millennial crowd.

The NRF survey also revealed that Halloween costume spending was expected to hit $3.1 billion dollars for this year.

But what have people searched since the NRF survey was conducted?

Frightgeist revealed the most popular costume searches in the U.S. were, not surprisingly, “comic book characters.” “Suicide Squad” character Harley Quinn took first place and the Joker followed behind in second. The ghoulish female villain was ranked the number choice nationally by the search engine, and was most-searched in Glendive, Montana; Yuma, Arizona; Juneau, Arkansas; Oak Hill, West Virginia and Victoria, Texas.

Read on for the top ten most-searched costume ideas below, according to Frightgeist.
