The most famous drummer the world has ever known turned 71 years old today.

Ringo Starr (born Richard Starkey), who gave The Beatles their beat and became beloved the world over for his sad blue eyes, big nose and down-to-earth modesty, is now a grandfather several times over.

Born in extreme poverty, Ringo endured a miserable childhood of illness and repeated hospitalizations. Even when he was invited to join the Beatles, he was attacked by fans that preferred the man he replaced, Pete Best.
