Harmony Gold Mining Co. Ltd. said Monday it halted operations at one of its South African mines after a worker died in an underground accident at the project.

The victim, whose identity wasn't immediately available, died following an accident in the shaft at the landing on 73 level at (the) Kusasalethu mine near Carltonville, the company said.

Investigations are under way to establish the cause of the accident.

All operations at the mine have been suspended until investigations have been completed.

The mine is southwest of Johannesburg and employs 5,756 people, including 773 contractors.
