Her Majesty the Queen has joined the unwashed commoners on Twitter -- and sent her first tweet today about the launch of the Information Age gallery at the Science Museum in London, reports CNN. "It is a pleasure to open the Information Age exhibition today at the @ScienceMuseum and I hope people will enjoy visiting. Elizabeth R," read the tweet from Queen Elizabeth. "Elizabeth R." stands for regina or queen.

Tweeting on @BritishMonarchy, the official British monarchy Twitter feed, with more than 700,000 followers, her tweet even got a followup from the feed, with a message authenticating the tweet. "The last tweet was sent personally by The Queen from her official Twitter account @BritishMonarchy #TheQueenTweets."

But since it was Twitter, the official home of Haters, the tweet was not without its naysayers. Folks at The Verge noticed that although images show the queen tweeting from her iPad, the original tweet indicated it was made from an iPhone. "It's possible the Queen may have typed it offstage on an iPhone," they wrote, "allowing an aide to send it on her behalf to avoid any connection issues or mishaps." But the British monarchy spokesperson, responding to inquiries, declined to discuss how the tweet was sent. They insisted "it was sent by the Queen and that any iPhone involvement was simply 'processology.' "
