In the new biopic movie Amelia, two time Academy Award winner Hilary Swank portrays Amelia Earhart, one of the 21st century's most famous women. Known as the first female pilot to cross the Atlantic, and the first pilot ever to fly from Hawaii to California, Amelia Earhart was a pioneer; a bold outspoken woman who seemed larger than life. It's no surprise then that an actress such as Hilary Swank, who has built her career playing interesting women with unusual lives (Think Boys Don't Cry and Million Dollar Baby) was chosen to fill her shoes on the big screen. Given Swank's striking resemblance to Earhart (especially after the haircut), it doesn't seem like it would be a difficult transition.
At the recent premiere of Amelia at the Paris Theater in New York, Hilary Swank and co-stars Richard Gere and Ewan McGregor took to the red carpet looking like film stars from the 1930s. In a teal colored draped Grecian style gown from designer Vionnet, Hilary wore her hair upswept, showcasing beautiful diamond dangle earrings from Neil Lane. Hilary upped the glamour wattage by adding a thick diamond cuff bracelet, also from Neil Lane. Hilary Swank plays a daring woman on screen, and looks every bit the daring woman on the red carpet.
Despite receiving mixed reviews, there is already Oscar buzz attached to Hilary Swank's performance. Hilary Swank says she is often drawn to characters with great individuality and unusual lives, and that Amelia Earhart lived her life the way she wanted to live it, and made no apologies. Seems like a role custom made for Hilary Swank - now lets see if she turns it into Oscar gold!
Hilary Swank has won two Oscars for playing masculine women yet she is able to look effortlessly elegant and feminine on the red carpet. Do you think we are due to see Ms. Swank playing a girly girl next?
