Stocks added to gains on Tuesday with the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 briefly up more than 2 percent as reassuring results from Home Depot helped improve sentiment, following a 12-year low close for Wall Street a day earlier.

Crude oil futures rose 1 percent.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> rose 114.53 points, or 1.61 percent, to 7,229.31. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> gained 13.93 points, or 1.87 percent, at 757.26. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> added 27.04 points, or 1.95 percent, to 1,414.76.
